たたきつぶす【叩き潰す】

1 〔叩いて潰す〕 (hit and) crush; pound [smash] to a flat shape; flatten; squash.

●空き缶を叩きつぶす flatten an empty can

・ハエを叩きつぶす swat a fly; smash a fly.

2 〔比喩的に〕 administer a crushing defeat 《to…》; squelch [squash].

●敵を叩きつぶす crush the enemy

・人種の偏見を叩きつぶす tear [break] down racial prejudice

・相手の自尊心を叩きつぶす crush the other party's pride.

●相手はたちまち叩きつぶされた. The opponent was sent to a crushing defeat in no time.
